The Throne of Grace This is a skilfully made 35cm (14") replica, in tough resin, of a medieval alabaster piece in the Abbey Church. This configuration of the Trinity, examples of which can be found throughout England, is known as the Throne of Grace or The Throne of Mercy. It shows God the Father, seated in majesty, receiving the acceptable sacrifice of his Son on the Cross, his right hand raised to bless the world again (this is the disc at the foot of the cross), while the Holy Spirit is perched on top of the cross bearing the olive branch of peace. Ampleforth Madonna Wood Finish The Lady Statue in the Abbey's Lady Chapel is well-known and much-loved. The original is 1 metre (just over 3 feet) high, 13th century, German carved in wood. Mary is crowned and carries a lily sceptre in her right hand. She tilts slightly to one side to balance the weight of the child on her hip, and half smiles at him. Jesus holds an orb as if it were a toy, though it symbolises his lordship over all creation. It is the combination of the theological statement with what is so recognisably human that attracts the viewer and invites prayer. Customcast, who made the replica of the Throne of Grace for us, also created this in strong resin. It stands 30cm (12 inches) high and weighs over 2kg (about 5lb).
